Now I would like to talk about unit roles in this build, or the specific function of each unit. Anytime you make a unit, you want to have a focused purpose for it. Since this is our first BO, let’s start from the ground up- Probes. Never, ever, ever stop making Probes! If you want to get technical, the max is between 70 and 80. As a new player, you won’t get there, you will forget to make them, and life will go on. I have been playing Starcraft since 2000 and I still forget to make probes! Do your best to remember though, as the more harvesters you have, the better the income, the more you have to spend on buildings, tech, and units, and the more powerful of an army you will have to crush your opponent with!

Zealots (top right) from your Warp Gates will act as your meat shield, protecting your more valuable units from a lot of the damage, and are going to be the primary defense for your Robotics units. Stalkers, again from the Warp Gates, will be your basic ranged attacker, but in numbers can do a lot of damage. As a young player, do not worry about Sentries quite yet- they require a bit more micro to use, and we want to focus on macro to start : ).
At your Robotics Facility, the Observer is going to keep you from getting hit by any cheesy invisible play, like a Zerg opponent rushing burrowed Roaches, or a Terran player rushing cloaked Banshees, because it is a "detector", meaning it can spot invisible units. A perk of the Observer is that it itself is invisible, making it an excellent scout. An Immortal (bottom right) is the ultimate tank and DPS dealer, best used against armored opponents, but just good in general anyway. The Immortals have a decent range, and many opponents will try to rush up and take them out, which allows the Zealots up front to get a lot of free hits. One last feature to mention about the Immortals is that while their shields remain, they can take a maximum of 10 damage. The last unit for this build to mention is going to be the Colossus, built at the Robotics Facility, if you choose to tech up that far (it requires an extra building to create- the Robotics Bay). This is going to be your AoE unit, or Area of Effect, meaning each time it attacks it will affect multiple targets. One last thing I want to mention about this build is the unit composition. You can decide how to make your units two ways- by making the same thing every time, or by seeing what your opponent has and reacting off of that. As you start out your adventures as a Protoss play, just make sure you are constantly making attacking units and harvesters. A general idea is 1 Zealot and 2 Stalkers for each Warp Gate round (Warp Gates have about a 30 second cooldown period), and 2 - 3 Immortals in your army. |
